Bansko, Bulgaria – Week 5

A cold snap came to Bansko this week. Temperatures were in the single digits and low 20s. We know it is winter, but it feels especially cold because the temperatures here have been mild.

This week we went to the Deska House for traditional Bulgarian food, music, and dancing. The three sisters are famous in Bulgaria. We had fun dressing up in traditional Bulgarian clothing. The sisters stuffed us full of food and rakia. Rakia is a brandy wine made of smashed fruits. It contains about 40% alcohol.

Lucas braved the cold weather and went skiing with friends earlier in the week. Henry went ice skating with friends. Lucas, Henry, and Michael all skied mid-week, and I skied with Lucas later in the week when the temperatures warmed up. I cannot keep up with Lucas and Henry while skiing. I think I am going fast, and Lucas and Henry fly by me. They also take every opportunity to jump. I like keeping my skis on the ground.

A perfect day to ski!

We had more roundtable discussions with other parents at the world-school hub. We discussed how to fund travel, and we shared places we have been and places we want to go so we can be a resource to each other for our future travels.

Michael and I spent time this week thinking about and booking our future travels. Planning travel takes up a lot of time, especially when you cannot decide where to go. We often go down rabbit holes researching and planning. There are so many places we want to visit in the world! That is why it is helpful to talk to families that have been where we are going. It helps take some guesswork and research time out of the equation.

Lucas has a group of friends who go to a nearby field to play soccer. Henry joins in occasionally. Henry found friends to play soft combat games. Both boys have been learning Dungeons and Dragons.

We took turns being sick over the last week. It is bound to happen since we are in a large group. It is never fun being sick, but we all recovered. We are lucky that we spent the last several years avoiding illness. It is an inevitable part of life and travel, but so far we have been able to get any medicine and treatment we need.
