Our time in Bran has been filled with laughter, history, mountain views, and home-cooked meals. After a week apart—Lucas off on his adventure at Speak Teens Camp and Michael making a trip back to the U.S.—we were so happy to be together again.
One of our favorite outings was to Cantacuzino Castle in nearby Bușteni. Fans of the Netflix series Wednesday might recognize this stunning place—it’s where many of the outdoor shots of Nevermore Academy were filmed! Beyond its recent pop culture fame, the castle has a rich history. Built in 1911 for Prince Gheorghe Grigore Cantacuzino (known as the “Nabob” because of his incredible wealth), the castle was a symbol of the Romanian aristocracy’s grandeur in the early 20th century. Much of the furniture and murals were destroyed when the castle was taken over during the communist era and turned into a hospital, but you can still get a sense of what it was like during its heyday. They had a recreation of Wednesday’s bedroom from the show. It was a fun photo opportunity. They also checked our individual tickets several times. Bless your heart, Vicki.
Inside, there was an Ancient Rome exhibit where we got hands-on with history. We tried on Roman armor and experimented with ancient pulley systems.
Back at the house, we settled into a slower rhythm: playing board games, holding calisthenics sessions for the boys, and spending lots of relaxing family time. Our lovely hosts ensured we felt right at home. We also had a visit from a little kitten who decided to make herself at home with us. She was sweet, friendly, and completely unbothered by our brood. Even the owner’s dog, Thor, gave her a pass! We gave her plenty of love while she was there.
A surprise highlight of the week was reconnecting with the Jasper family, whom we met in Budapest. They happened to be in Bran too, and it was so fun to hang out again! We headed to the Green Garden Pub, a great spot with a spectacular view of the surrounding peaks. There was live music (Jake and Gabe), and a large yard for activities. The Jaspers introduced us to circus toys, and Henry is now completely obsessed with his diablo. He and his friend Kaya spent hours outside practicing tricks, tossing it high into the mountain air.
As we pack up to head to our next destination, we’re leaving Bran with full hearts. This little mountain town gave us a peaceful pause in our travels, the joy of reunions, and some beautiful memories.
On to the next adventure!
