A Little Cabin in the Woods

Michael and I had a chance to get away for a couple of days, just the two of us. Aunt Emily, Uncle Jonathan, and Grandpa Richard graciously agreed to keep an eye on Lucas and Henry for us while we went to a little cabin about an hour away in the North Carolina Mountains. This was our first overnight trip away from the kids since last year.

We rented a cute cabin that we found on Airbnb about an hour away from Winston-Salem in Wilkesboro. It was a small one-bedroom cabin on a farm.  It had a full kitchen and we had access to a fire pit on the property.  We felt comfortable staying here, even with COVID.

The host offered to cook us meals.  We opted for breakfast one morning. The eggs were fresh (from the chickens in the backyard) and the sausage gravy was delicious.

We only spent two nights at the cabin. The first night we sat on the couch and enjoyed the quiet. We caught up with each other because even though we spend every day together, we do not always connect.

On the one full day we were there, we headed to Stone Mountain Park (a 40-minute drive) and hiked. We did a moderate 5-mile hike. The trails were clearly marked and the scenery was beautiful.

After the hike, we built a fire in the fire pit and spent several hours listening to music, talking, and staring at the fire.

Self-care is important and sometimes that means taking a break from your children. I think Lucas and Henry appreciated the break from us too. This short vacation helped to recharge our batteries.
