On our last day in Bastamente started as an easy day. We were packing, finishing laundry, doing school work and other work.
Before lunch, we hiked up to the little school on the hill. It was summer vacation when we were here. The school year is from March to November.
We were told that the school is for grades K-9 and they have some night classes for adults. The school is tiny. With only 7 classrooms we wondered how everyone fit. Kids go in shifts. Some go in the morning and some go in the afternoon.
After lunch, we read some Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The kids are obsessed with Quidditch and the Firebolt. I also got in a glorious 30-minute nap.
Around 4:00 p.m. we set out in a direction we had not been before. As we started walking the path became narrow and it was full of trash. It wound around the island along the water.
At one point the path turned into the jungle and became a maze of makeshift bridges over marshland. The beams were not all sturdy and some were very narrow. It was like we were in the Goonies or an Indiana Jones movie.
Eventually, we came out at a posh resort farther down the island with beautiful rooms right on the water and a fancy-looking bar and restaurant.
We met a few American couples staying in small eco-friendly housing near the resort. We hung out at the end of a dock and watched the water taxis go by.
We also found an amazing nature preserve. I wish we had seen it earlier in the trip so we could have more time to explore
It was getting dark so we had to head back through the obstacle course. The boys loved it.
