Bankso, Bulgaria – Week 1

Bansko, Bulgaria was never on our radar as a place to visit. A worldschooling community brought us here. When we first started traveling, we knew finding community would be important. We saw just how great it could be last year on the beach in Ecuador. Despite our worldschool hub hosts being horrible, we made lifelong friendships with the other families we met there.

Another worldschooling hub brought us to Bansko. We traded bathing suits for ski pants and surfboards for skis. We arrived in Bansko a week before the hub started so we could get a feel for the city and take a rest from our fast-paced travels.

Bansko is a charming mountain ski resort town. Unfortunately, when we came there was no snow. Usually, by late December, all of the slopes are open. When we arrived in January, one run was open. Michael, Lucas, and Henry did go skiing a few times the first week and had a good time.

We kept busy doing other things such as ice skating, exploring the town, hiking, getting haircuts, and just relaxing in one place for more than four days. We met a nice couple from Athens vacationing in Bankso and got drinks with them one night at a bar called Queen’s Pub. The pub has entertainment every night. The night we were there they had fire dancing, acrobatics, and a live band.

Before our session officially began, we met a few Worldschooling families who had been at the hub in Bansko since mid-December for the first session. We ice-skated with them and played pool at Queen’s Pub. We will meet the rest of the families next week when we move into our worldschooling hub accommodations.
