Our destination in Costa Rica after Puntarenas was Monteverde. Monteverde is a wonderful break from the heat on the coast. There are sun showers every day. Did I mention the breeze! Monteverde is up in the clouds and close to heaven.
Our Airbnb was perfect. It is a small two-room house with two beds, a small kitchen, and a couch. It also has a full-sized washer dryer. We almost cried (ok, just me (Judy)) when our clothes came out smelling clean.
The family that owns it is lovely. Jose is the brother who is in charge of the Airbnb. His brother Oscar, who speaks English, helps Jose out. Their father Emilio showed us a field on his property where we played soccer, threw the frisbee and made an epic sword-fighting movie.
The family owns the restaurant next door too. We are mostly cooking, but we popped over there a couple of times.
The Airbnb is a bit far from the main town of Santa Elena. We thought we would have a car, but we did not. It was fine, it just took a little planning. Taxis are easy to call.
On the first day, we walked 4.8 kilometers to Santa Elena on a dangerous, windy, gravel road. It took about an hour. Henry was looking to hitch-hike but he had no takers.
Santa Elena is a cute mountain town with souvenir shops and restaurants. The boys each bought a small change purse. We have room for nothing else.
We took it easy in Monteverde. The boys spent most of the week outside running around the property. They built a fort and they were playing so well together (except for rock to the head incident inflicted by Lucas on Henry- there wasn’t too much blood).
We enjoyed the fresh mountain air, warm showers, and a slower pace. One thing we didn’t get away from was the roosters. At least the roosters in Monteverde are basically on a proper rooster schedule (in the morning).
