Scuba Certification in Ko Tao

A few families packed up for the weekend and headed to Ko Tao for scuba certification. Lucas, Henry, and Michael got a taste of Scuba diving in Vietnam with a try dive in Cham Islands. Lucas and Henry loved it and asked to get scuba-certified. Michael is nervous about scuba, but he is getting certified too. I am already scuba-certified, so I am cheering them on.

It is about a 6-hour journey door-to-door from Hua Hin to Ko Tao. We took a three-hour van ride to the ferry, and it is an almost 2- hour ferry ride. Lucas and Henry found Dunkin Donuts on the way.

Leading up to this weekend, the boys started their scuba course online. Lucas and Henry worked together in the week leading up to Ko Tao to read the chapters and take the quizzes. Michael also started the course and would join in the studying from time to time.

Our four days in Ko Tao were all about diving. We arrived in Ko Tao at 3 p.m. and headed to the dive center after dropping off our bags at our hotel (Island Dive Club). The scuba candidates signed the paperwork and got their schedule. They all had some homework that night and had to report back at 8 a.m. the next morning.

We went out for pizza at La Pizzeria da Claudio. They have vegan pizza, which was a treat for the vegans in our group. We met up with another worldschooling family with two boys that Michael has been talking to for a while on Facebook. The food in Ko Tao is diecious.

The next day, Michael, Lucas, Henry, and the rest of the scuba folks had a full day of theory and pool work. The kids were all comfortable in the water. They did a great job mastering the diving skills. Michael had trouble swimming without his mask, but the dive instructor helped him overcome his fears. After the first full day, there was only the final 45-question test standing between the boys and the ocean.

The boys all passed the written tests and successfully completed four dives. We had a great time diving. The coral in Ko Tao is beautiful.

Now, where do we dive next?
