San Juan Del Sur

Our first month of travel in Central America was fast.  A week here, a week there.  That sort of travel, for us, is not sustainable.

We decided to slow it down a bit and spend one month in San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua. We chose this town because of the things we read about it online. We read that is beautiful, family-friendly and easy to get around.

Our first accommodation was three blocks from the beach

We booked an Airbnb in the city. Two bedrooms, one bath, and a small kitchen. When you have spent several weeks sharing rooms and in close quarters, 800sq ft. with separate bedrooms is palatial.

Our kitchen in our first place was tiny, but it had everything we needed. The counter height was perfect for the boys to cook and do dishes.

From the first day, we knew we chose the right place.  When we first arrived we saw that San Juan Del Sur was a lively town with tons of shops and restaurants. Before we went to bed on our second day we all signed up for Spanish lessons (and took our first lesson), we joined a gym (and took our first class), and we got a library card (and checked out books). Lucas and Henry enjoyed the freedom to run out by themselves for a slice of pizza down the street or go to the store around the corner to grab groceries.

The boys signed up for surfing lessons. They took to it right away. We never thought we would have little surfer dudes.

The first month we were in San Juan Del Sure there were always events going on. There was a night market on Thursdays and another market on Saturdays. We went to a skateboarding event at a hotel nearby. The Facebook groups we joined were always promoting activities.

It did not take long for us to feel at home here and that is part of the reason why we decided to stay.  Everyone we have met so far has been kind and helpful.  People continue to be helpful during this time of isolation due to coronavirus. A mom Judy met through a Facebook group is sewing mask for us. We have met many people willing to deliver food and water to our house.

We loved our time here in San Juan Del sure before coronavirus.  We hope that things get better soon so that the city can open back up.
