When we set off on our trip to Central America, we planned to be back in the United States in May. One month in Nicaragua has turned into five, and we may be here longer than that.
Before coronavirus struck, dental tourism was big here in Nicaragua. The cost of dental care is much cheaper in Nicaragua than in the United States. Dental X-rays cost $20. Teeth cleaning costs $20 for kids and $40 for adults.
Dental hygiene is important to us. The boys have been going to the dentist since they were three-years-old. We always go twice a year for teeth cleaning.
We were all due for a cleaning, so we decided to contact a dentist in town here in San Juan Del Sur. We found Dr. Cora at Sun Care Dental. She is following CDC dental guidelines. She is only accepting patients by appointment.
We had a great experience. We learned that Henry needs to brush his back teeth better, Michael needs to floss every day, and both boys will need orthodontic work.
We also drove to Managua a couple of days later to a different office to get dental x-rays for the boys. The staff was friendly. We were the only people there and the boys were in and out in less than 20 minutes.
Now we have clean teeth. Hopefully, we will be able to get back to the U.S. before our next dental cleaning. If not, then we know where to go.
