Since we left for Central America in February the four of us have been together every day. We are not sick of each other yet, but everyone once in a while we need to have some space, and Michael and I need a date night. We have had several date nights since we have been traveling. The boys are old enough now that we can leave them at home. We leave a phone with the boys so they can contact us. The boys like it too because they get to do play video games and watch movies.
Date night is a chance for Michael and me to catch up. It may sound funny that we have to catch up when we spend every day together, but our days get hectic with the kids. We also have projects we are working on individually. By the time we are ready for bed, we are too tired to talk about our future plans or start deep conversations.
Our date nights are just dinner and maybe a walk on the beach. It is a little trickier with COVID, but there are still ways to get out of the house. We sometimes do date night at the house, but it is not the same as raking a comb through our hair and heading out.
Our latest date night was dinner at a restaurant in San Juan Del Sur called Simon Says. The restaurant was closed for a few months because of COVID. They recently opened back up with safety precautions. The restaurant has a lovely outdoor garden. We went on a Wednesday and were the only diners.
We ordered a delicious potato wedge appetizer. Michael ordered a traditional Nica dish of fish, rice, beans, and plantain chips. I ordered pesto pasta.
If we do not put it on the calendar we often do not make time for each other. The same was true when we were living in Atlanta. There are many things that have not changed since we became nomadic. The need for date nights is one of those things.
