We spent two weeks in Utah. We spent one day exploring Antelope State Island Park. It is a beautiful state park with hiking, beaches, a ranch, breathtaking scenery, and buffaloes.
It can easily be a full-day activity. It costs $15 per vehicle to enter the park. Once in the park, there are several trailheads of varying lengths for hiking, a big beach, and there is a restaurant if you do not bring your own food. We saw a lot of people biking and hiking.
The day we went the Buffalo roamed and the sky was not too cloudy all day. It does not rain much in Utah. We met a volunteer ranger who told us that there has been a bad drought and the lake water is low.
We stopped for lunch at the Buffalo Island Grill. Michael was not deterred by seeing the Buffalo roaming. He ate a Buffalo burger.
We did not do any of the long hikes. We did the Buffalo Point Trail, which is a short 1-mile hike up to a panoramic vista. The rangers provide clear information about how strenuous each hike is and all of the trails are clearly marked. It was warm the day we went. We have spent the last month skiing and being in freezing weather. It was a shock to our bodies. We reminded the boys that this time last year we were roasting in Nicaragua.
We also walked out to the beach. We skipped rocks and put our hands in the lake. It is salty. There were other people swimming. We did not think it was that warm.
The boys met two brothers and had a game of tag for 20 minutes before our food came. The boys are craving social interaction. They were happy to play, even if just for a little while. Poor Henry was playing so hard that he got a little scraped up. He was having fun and didn’t even cry. No childhood is complete without scraped knees.
There is a lot to explore in Antelope Island State Park. We could go back a few times and not see it all. We drove by Fielding Garr Ranch, but the boys fell asleep, so we didn’t explore it. The ranch house is the oldest Anglo building still standing on its original foundation in Utah.
We recommend Antelope Island State Park if you are in Salt Lake City.
Looks like a great day!
It was a great day. We love being outside, especially when we are living in smaller accommodations.
